Introduction
Hello! My name is Anneliese Goertzen and I am an Illustration and Graphic Design major at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. I have lived in Belleville Kansas for most of my life and I wanted to share my experiences growing up in Republic County. From what I love about rural Kansas to the hidden gems and places to see, Republic County has a special place in my heart.
Growing Up in Belleville
After moving from Wichita for my father’s job, I spent 17 years living in Belleville. I love the small town and community aspect of Republic County. I might have a little bit of a bias since I have never truly lived anywhere else, but this town does have a lot to offer! I don’t have to worry about morning traffic or rush hour when driving so I can get to work on time. Also since it is a small town, you know everyone and their jobs, so you don’t feel like a stranger. It is nice to have a home to come back to when classes are not in session. Can’t wait to see what this summer has in store for me!
Growing up in Belleville, I have learned a lot about the town. Most of the history can be seen in the Republic County Historical Museum, but you can also travel around Belleville’s town square and read about the town. It truly is the central hub of the town. From the Public Library to various restaurants and activities, you can always find somewhere to go on the square.
Places to See
One of my favorite places to go is the Blair Theater. I went to that theater a lot as a kid and am glad I can have one in my town. It only has one screen but it still manages to get all the new movies in. It’s one of those places that you drive by on Main Street every day and looks beautiful when the lights come on at night. It took a hit during covid, and I think more people should take the time to go to the movies.
Right next to it is Tuxie’s Ten Pin bowling alley. I remember going bowling as a kid but for many years the bowling alley was closed. Now that they have reopened, it has been a place to take friends and family to have fun! They are even hosting a bowling league for those who are extra competitive.
Another one of Republic County’s hidden gems is the Paul Boyer Museum of Animated Carvings. I used to love going to that museum as a kid. It was a fun and goofy little place where you could spend hours looking at these little animated carvings. The place and the art are something extraordinary and whenever you get the chance you should see them.
One gem that is not so hidden is the North Central Kansas Free Fair and the races. If you are ever in Belleville at the beginning of August, you must go to the fair. Not only does it have some of the best fried food you can eat, but it also has fun activities such as the fair rides, showing animals, music, and races. My favorite place is the Floral Hall mostly because that is where I enter my artwork for the fair. Though that isn’t the only thing you can enter. You can enter baked goods, fruits, vegetables, and even antiques! I have been going every year, and there is always something new that I can enjoy.
